Stanford University is one of the world’s foremost research and teaching institutions. Leland and Jane Stanford founded the University in 1885 to “promote the public welfare by exercising an influence on behalf of humanity and civilization”. Located in California, Stanford’s entrepreneurial culture was vital in the creation of Silicon Valley and the high-technology industry. Stanford includes seven schools and enrolls about 15,000 students. Stanford is committed to contributing to some of the world’s most daunting environmental, health related and governance challenges. The current faculty includes 16 Nobel laureates and four Pulitzer prizewinners.

In 1876, former California Governor Leland Stanford purchased 650 acres of Rancho San Francisquito for a country home and began the development of his famous Palo Alto Stock Farm. He later bought adjoining properties totaling more than 8,000 acres.
